How To Wild Camp Iceland
Over the course of a few weeks, Kristan and I decided to pack two backpacks full of equipment and a tent and buy one way tickets to Iceland to embark on a wild camping/backpacking journey of a lifetime. We chose Northern Europe mainly because we hear it’s amazing this time of year and because wild camping is legal here. Not only legal, but in some countries, like Norway, it’s actually encouraged. If you leave no trace, are respectful of the locals and the environment, and treat your location like you would treat your home, I say go for it!. We have only been to Iceland so far and have wild camped about half the time we have been here. I will write another post after we finish the whole country letting you know if we have had any issues but this is my two cents on it so far.
The Legality of Wild Camping
First off, the wild camping law in Iceland states that as long as you are 100 yards away from a resident, are on uncultivated land, and you aren’t near a designated campsite, you can pitch a tent for one night.
Before heading out here, I couldn’t find much on the feasibility of wild camping in Iceland. Although I know what the law states, nobody really talked about if it were realistic to wild camp or not.
