Illegal Questions for Employers To Ask During An Interview

The Interview process can be daunting. Some of the questions employers ask you might be personal or put you at a disadvantage against everyone else. You assume most employers know exactly what they can and can’t ask you during an interview, but you would be surprised. Below is a list of questions you didn’t know were illegal for an employer to ask you.

Do you have a car?

An employer can’t specifically ask you if you have a car. It implies an automated disadvantage against you if you don’t and it is illegal for an employer not to hire you based on the question. Another way to word the question which makes it legal is “Do you have reliable transportation?” If you can’t get to work then it’s justified not to hire you, but they can’t discriminate against you based on how you get to work.

How Old Are You?

I am not sure why employers think they can ask this, but they often do. Age is a protected class under federal guidelines. If you tell them your age and they don’t hire you, they might have a lawsuit on their hands. A legal way to word the question for employers is “Are you over the age of 21?”

Are You a US Citizen?

This might come as a shock but you read it right. Employers can’t ask you if you are a citizen of the US. A…
