Last month, my company just hit the one-year mark for being open. I wasn’t working on it full time back then, but needless to say, I’ve been self-employed for nearly a year now. It has been incredible, horrible, stressful, and unforgettable. I see blogs all the time telling you how to become self-employed and why you need to get rid of your 9–5. All of this might sound nice through a screen. However, the reality is not always accurately reflected. I want to start off by saying I know how blessed I am to work for myself every day. But I am the first person to admit it isn’t for everyone, and it comes with its own kind of obstacles. Let’s talk about the truth.

When you are self-employed, you need a lot of discipline. A LOT. Yes, you are more than welcome to sleep in until 1 PM every day, but chances are when you get up, you will want to just scroll on your phone. Eventually, when you crawl out of bed, the last thing you want to do is work. After all, you could sleep in. It must be a Saturday with no family around. If I sleep in one day, the rest of my day becomes a handstand walk attempting to get things productive accomplished. That’s not all. You will want to take Fridays off on weekends, visit family, and run errands. Which more than likely won’t be the case, especially when you’re starting out.
