The Best Way to Increase Your Travel While Still On a Budget

Vacations. Something that went away for a good part of half of last year because of the pandemic is slowly coming back into reality. It’s great. Get away from your job and house, go somewhere completely different with your family or by yourself. But do you take enough of them?

We all hear about the significantly higher level of PTO offered in Europe compared to here. In fact, it was years before I got a job that even offered PTO. While it’s more normal to get around a month off a year over there, it’s lucky to receive more than two weeks in the US.

And if you don’t work for someone that offers PTO, it’s near impossible to take that dream vacation that has been sitting in the back of your head for all of those years. Which sucks. You can always take vacations without PTO. But if you are like the average American, living paycheck to paycheck, you will be worried about making the money up afterward.

So should you take more vacations? Well, that depends on the person. If you are working at a start-up, on the verge of avoiding shutting down, you will probably have to wait for a few years. But you are working a “typical” 9–5 and living paycheck to paycheck, then you should. Life is way too short not to take more vacations. Going tomorrow will already be too late.
