Why I Decided To Stop Telling People That I Run My Own Business in 2021
So there I am. Sitting at a coffee shop on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I am sipping on some warm sweet coffee, working on my company like I do every weekend. A man about my same age walks by, sits down, and starts to draw on his Ipad. He had an awesome Tattoo, so I did what I do best and struck up a conversation. The guy seemed awesome and we hit it off. We were talking about life and crazy stories, then we got on the subject of professional careers. I hate to lie, so I told the truth. I told him I run my business full time. He knew I was a few years younger than him and immediately I could tell this threw him off. About 2 minutes later he all of sudden had to leave. Yea, once again I made someone feel bad about where they are in life.
And that’s what it feels like when I tell people what I do. I am on the younger side of life, and the stigma around business owners is super-rich and successful. Whenever I tell someone around my age what I do, it’s almost like they feel like they haven’t done enough, and end up pushing away from me. Ever since I started my company it’s been really hard to find friends my age. All of my new friends the last two years are 10+ years older than me. Which is cool, but I also want to know people my age!
